REFORMER
The Pilates Reformer is a wonderful way to achieve the benefits of Pilates. It provides finely tuned exercise resistance with the use of spring tension that allows the individual to work very precisely to develop good alignment, core strength and flexibility.
It consists of a gliding platform that can be layed on, sat on or stood on. There are also straps that can be used to either work the arms or legs and a box to place on the reformer to give further options for working the entire body.
Although it looks a little scary, in the same way with matwork, there is a full repertoire of moves that can be done at all levels from those with mobility problems and muscle weakness right up to athletic conditioning.
Our Reformer classes are using the Allegro Reformer. There are 6 machines at the Guildford Pilates Place so everyone has their own machine.
MATWORK
Pilates on the mat was developed to make Pilates more accessible and transportable enabling classes to be run just about anywhere without the large studio equipment. The principles are the same and moves are done on the mat either laying on your back, front, side, kneeling or sitting. Moves are modified from the classical Pilates repertoire to suit the class level, enabling everyone to work at a suitable level for their individual needs.
Pilates on the mat can also incorporate a number of props - mini-ball, foam rollers, dynabands, blocks, Pilates ring - in order to provide additional support for the body, or an extra challenge, and to provide variety to a matwork class.
